People come to Fleming Island because it’s the perfect place to live, just minutes from Downtown Jacksonville, right on the river, and close to everything you might need without being in the middle of the hustle and bustle.
Significant neighborhood developments in the community include Eagle Harbor, Fleming Island Plantation, and Pace Island. All these neighborhoods make Fleming Island one of the best places to live, raise a family, and retire in the entire country. Plus, to inspire physical activity and promote healthy lifestyles, there’s an eight-foot sidewalk running the whole length of the island, providing about seven miles for residents to walk, jog, run, or bike.
A Little History
But Fleming Island didn’t start this way. In fact, the peninsula has some very humble beginnings. It was settled by George Fleming in the late 1700s, an Irish Immigrant who received a 1,000-acre land grant from the then Spanish governor of East Florida. George Fleming built a beautiful plantation in 1790 called Hibernia Plantation – “Hibernia” actually translates to “Ireland” in Latin.
The community remained relatively undeveloped until 1942, when the United States Navy built four asphalt runways on the island, making it an auxiliary airfield for the Naval Air Station Jacksonville. The airfield was abandoned in the sixties. And residential development began in the 1990s.
Today, it remains one of the best places to live in Florida, with close proximity to everything you could possibly want in your hometown. Of course, it’s a relatively new area, especially compared to other cities in Northeast Florida. But what the community lacks in history, it makes up for in luxury!
