Whether you’re currently expecting a new little one or the little one(s) you already have are growing up a bit too quickly, many things go into preparing for their arrival and ultimately raising them. One of those things is finding the time, energy, and money to decorate their bedrooms.
Decorating a kid’s room is always an exciting challenge. One quick search of 2021 nursery trends or a quick trip down Pinterest Lane, and you’ll be bombarded with a million ideas. So, we’ll try to keep it simple. Here are five tips and tricks for nursery décor, decoration inspiration, and organizing kid’s rooms to help get those creative juices flowing.
1. Steer Clear of Themes
Pirates, princesses, race cars, and horses are all fun themes to play with, but much like the seasons, your child’s interests are constantly changing. Their first few years are critical for development, and everything happens fast. So, while they may love playing with princess dolls one day, they may wake up the next and find they’re enamored with planets and space travel.
Unless you plan on redecorating the entire room based on the ever-evolving whim of your child, stick with neutrality. It’s best to avoid specific themes and instead fold those favorites (like pirates, space, and princesses) into prints, pillows, and other accessories that can easily be changed without breaking the bank.
2. Keep Organization in Mind
There will be countless days when you’ll be responsible for keeping your kid’s room clean, so you need to make cleaning as easy as possible. Plus, they’re children, so you should try to keep it simple anyway. Sometimes, you just need a place (or a few places) to quickly shove all the mess and toys – that’s totally okay!
Forget open shelves and complex organizational systems. Invest in your own sanity. Spacious closets, toy chests or baskets with lids, and furniture with doors and drawers are the secret tools in an expert decorator’s arsenal.
3. Allow Space for Self-Expression
If you have the option, you should add elements that allow your child to express themselves. Consider a chalkboard-painted wall, an oversized glass dry erase board, a magnet wall, or a corkboard for hanging those beautiful little “masterpieces.” Kids love when their parents allow them to express themselves. Plus, if your children have the sudden urge to draw on walls, they’ll have the space to do it!
4. Keep it Functional
The best way to maximize the space in your child’s room is to keep everything functional. Choose items and furniture that will endure over time. Make sure your child has everything they need to be comfortable and happy. And before you purchase anything, look up reviews from other parents and make sure you’re getting the most for your money.
5. Remember, Less is More
This is just the beginning. You can always add or change to your kid’s room, so start small and be thoughtful. Don’t overcrowd them. Start with the necessities, add a little flare, and then build on it. Kids famously take up a lot of space without much help, so be sure to give them plenty of room to grow.
