A Little History
Middleburg, Florida, began as an early-nineteenth-century settlement and was initially named after Asa Clark, who ran the very first ferry on Black Creek. But following the Seminole Wars, the settlement was previously known as “Clark’s Ferry” quickly started to grow and expand, trading in timber, cotton, citrus fruits, and other farm crops. The settlement combined with Whitesville to become Middleburgh in 1851 and eventually dropped the “h.”
Middleburg became considerably smaller after the American Civil War and went through some hard times. But the area has changed significantly in the last century, expanding along with other locations in the area and welcoming trade, entertainment, and more. As a result, there are several notable people from Middleburg, including a couple of professional NFL tight ends, Donnie and Johnny Van Zant (of 38 Special, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Van Zant, respectively), and Slim Whitman, a country singer and songwriter.
