Deerwood Country Club Community
How They Came to Be
The Deerwood Country Club community is considered Southside Jacksonville’s most exclusive residential area. At the turn of the 20th century, the Skinner family came to the Jacksonville area. The local pines provided sap for producing turpentine. They acquired bought up 40,000 acres for this endeavor. In 1960, the family brought in George Cobb, a noted golf course architect of the time, to create a golf course. A year after its completion, the first house was built in what would become the Deerwood Country Club community. Today, the community runs the gamut from condominiums and courtyard communities all the way up to five-acre lots, with most homesites occupying one-half acre lots.
The Country Club
Over the years, the Deerwood Country Club switched hands. It started out in the Skinner family’s hands. Then, in 1970, Stockton, Whatley & Davin bought it. A decade later, they sold it to Gate Petroleum. But, just before welcoming in the new millennium, members of the club bought it from Gate. It remains an equity club to this day.
Highly Exclusive
Just because you own a home in the Deerwood Country Club community does not automatically grant you membership to the country club. First, two members in good standing must sponsor you. Then, your application goes before the Board of Governors for approval. One membership covers your entire family provided that they are under 24 and live at home.
World-Class Golfing
Florida is well known for its amazing golf courses. The Players Championship takes place in nearby Ponte Vedre Beach. But its roots started at the golf course found right here, at Deerwood Country Club. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the club played host to the Greater Jacksonville Open. In 2004, all of the golf facility was renovated. Golf architect Brian Silva designed a new course that brought it into the 21st century. They even sponsor two teams on the PGA Junior Team that are sure to include future tournament winners.
